The number of elderly in the total population is increasing every year. This has caused a demand for healthcare professionals. Because of this, more and more people are looking for ways to start a career in the field of health. There is plenty of work waiting for those who wish to become a Home Health Aide or a Certified Nurse Aide.
CNAs and HHAs are basically the same thing. The main difference between the two of them is their working place. Nursing aides mostly work in long term care facilities while HHAs work in the client’s private residence. Before you can work as either of them, you must first be certified by the Licensing and Certification program.
The first step in the certification process is to enroll in an appropriate program that is approved by the state’s Department of Public Health. CNA programs are required to offer a minimum of 150 hours while HHA programs can offer a minimum of 40 hours. Both of these program’s curriculum are composed of theories and clinical practice. Depending on which program you enroll in, it can take you 4-6 months to complete your training.
Applicants can verify a school program is legitimate by call the Training Program Review Unit (TPRU) at (916) 552-8873. For further details regarding the current requirements to become a certified nurse aide one can call the CA Department of Public Health at their phone number:(916) 327-2445 or email: cna@cdph.ca.gov.
Once you are through your training, the next step is to apply for the certification exam. You must take the exams within two years from completing the program or need to retake a course. This exam consists of a written/oral exam and a practical skills evaluation. In order to get certified, you must pass both of them. You will only have 3 attempts to pass. If you fail after the third attempt, you must complete another training program before you can reapply.
Certifications in California are only valid for 2 years. It will be your responsibility to renew it before it expires. CNA certificate holders are required to work at least 8 hours within the certification period and meet 48 hours of in-service training or continuing education. HHA’s are only required to meet 24 hours of in-service training. This form (http://www.cdph.ca.gov/pubsforms/forms/CtrldForms/CDPH283a.pdf) must be submitted along with the renewal forms (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070512.pdf).
