The first step in becoming a nursing assistant in California is to enroll in a state-certified nursing assistant training course. Enrolling in a training course will help you learn all that you will need to properly function as a nursing assistant. It will also make you eligible to challenge the state’s certification exam. According to the law, you can only work in a CDPH-approved nursing facility if you are certified.
Training courses in the state are required to offer their students no less than 150 hours of lectures. The curriculum will cover 16 different modules and will consist of classroom lessons and practical training in a nursing home or facility. Depending on which course you choose to enroll in, it can take you 8-24 weeks to complete your training.
Fingerprinting and undergoing criminal background checks are part of the requirements to become a nursing assistant. No student is allowed to proceed to the clinical area without undergoing or passing the background checks. Students who have records that prevent them from getting certified such as physical abuse, drug abuse, or theft will no longer be allowed to continue.
The certification exam in California is conducted by Pearson VUE. It consists of a written/oral knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. Both portions are taken on the same day so please plan accordingly. A failed test means a failed certification exam. You may reapply for the exam and retake the test that you failed. You can only do this up to two times. If you fail for the third time you will be required to undergo retraining before you can reapply.
The certification exam is not limited to individuals who completed a CNA training course. Those who enrolled in military training as a medic or enrolled in a nursing education program as a nursing student or graduate is allowed to apply for the exam.
