Nursing aides can be found in different healthcare settings. You can find them working in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation center, clinics, assisted living centers, and many more. This is one of the reasons why nursing aides are very much in demand in the United States. If you are looking for a way to become a healthcare provider then this is the answer that you are looking for.
As a CNA, you will be working hand-in-hand with nurses and other health care personnel in taking care of the patients. You will use the basic nursing care skills to help patients with tier day to day activities like bathing, cleaning, eating, dressing, ambulating, as well as give emergency procedures if needed.
With the number of people aiming to become nursing aides, the government now requires all aspiring nursing aides to complete a state-approved training program. One of the best ways to learn all there is to know about how to function as a nursing aide is to attend a CNA training program. These programs consist of 150 hours of lectures and clinical practice. Depending on the program you select, it can take you 2 to 6 months to complete your training.
General requirements to be accepted into a CNA program:
• Age: be at least 18 years old
• Criminal Background: must be able to pass federal and state background checks
• English Proficiency: must understand and speak Basic English
• Education: have at least a high school diploma or a GED certificate
• Health: Must pass physical examinations, be complete of all necessary immunizations, and be free of any communicable diseases
Due to the number of drug-related incidents that occurred in a healthcare setting, all nursing aides are required to undergo a criminal background check. The state of California requires applicants to complete a Request for Live Scan Services. A copy of the request must be sent to the CDPH prior to the start of the clinical rotation. No student may proceed to the clinical area without sending those forms.
After you complete your training the next step is to test whether you are a competent nursing aide or not. The competency exam will test your knowledge and skills. It is a two part exam that consists of a written/oral test and a practical skills evaluation. Taking this test is the final step in becoming a nursing aide. You can only work in a state-certified nursing facility if you are properly certified.
To get certified, candidates must pass all the tests. In case of a failed exam, each candidate is given 3 attempts to pass. These attempts are only valid within 2 years after completing their training program. If they fail to pass after the 3rd attempt or within 2 years after training, they will be required to complete another training course.
If you already posses a certification issued from a different state, then you may apply for reciprocity. Your license should still be active and that you must have a good relationship with the state you came from.
