If you are thinking of becoming a healthcare provider you might want to consider becoming a nursing aide. Nursing aides are people who are trained to help licensed nurses in providing nursing and nursing related care to patients in different healthcare settings. You may find them in nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, assisted living centers, clinics, hospitals, and even at the patient’s own residence.
A CNA license is required for those who are seeking to work in California as a nursing assistant. These licenses will only be given to those who have successfully completed training in an ATCS-approved training program and pass the competency examinations. Those that are taught in a training program will cover theoretical health care instruction that is required by the state and federal governments as well as hands-on skills practice.
The organization that handles certification is called the Aide and Technician Certification Section of the L&C Program. If you have no background experience in this line of work then the only way to get certified is to challenge the certification exam.
To help you prepare for the certification exam, you must enroll and complete a state-approved CNA training program. Approved programs are required to teach both theoretical lessons and practical skills training. Every program takes a minimum of 150 hours to complete. Depending on the program you choose, you can complete a program within 2 to 6 months of continuous training.
The certification exam consists of a written/oral knowledge exam and a skills evaluation exam. You can only get certified if you are able to pass all the tests. You must pass both portions within three attempts to be added to the nurse aide registry. Passing the background checks conducted by the federal and the state is also a requirement to take the examination. You can contact the CA Department of Public Health at (916) 327-2445 to get additional details about registry requirements. The state has authorized Pearson VUE to help conduct and score the exams. If you visit www.pearsonvue.com you can download a copy of the Candidate Handbook, which contains detailed information regarding the certification exam.
If you pass all the tests your name will be entered into the Nurse Aide Registry. This Registry contains all the names of those who are allowed to work in the state as a nursing aide. Employers will only hire nursing aides whose names are on the list.
To keep your name on the Registry you must renew your certification every 24 months. Requirements for renewal include completing 48 hours of in-service/CE and working for at least 8 hours as a paid nursing aide. You will not be allowed to continue working with an expired certification. An expired certification can only be reactivated by taking a competency evaluation exam within 2 years after its expiration.
