Are you looking for a great way to start a career in the field of medicine? Do you love to take care of others with genuine concern? If you answered yes to any of these, then you might want to think about becoming a nursing aide.
Nursing aides are some of the most in demand healthcare professionals in the United States. Although they work under the supervision of the registered nurses, they are still important members of the healthcare team.
In order to work as one, you’ll need to complete a state-approved training program and take the state’s certification exam. Since nursing aides are entry level professionals, their training is a lot quicker and easier compared to other courses. With the right training program, you can start working as a certified nursing aide just within 6 months.
CNA training in Virginia consists of 75 hours of both lectures and supervised clinical practice. Both the lectures and practical training and done concurrently. However, prior to entering the clinical area and taking care of a patient; students are first taught about the following concepts:
• Medical and Surgical Asepsis
• Basic Nursing Skills
• Personal Care
• Communication and Interpersonal Skills
• Safety Precautions
• Emergency Care
• Respecting the Patient’s Rights
• Promoting Patient’s Independence
Completing an approved CNA program will make you eligible to apply for the certification exam. The advantage of becoming a nursing aide is there are lots of ways for you to become one. Nursing students and graduates are allowed to immediately apply for the certification exam without the need for any further training.
The certification exam consists of a written test and a practical skills evaluation. Candidates are given a maximum of 2 hours to answer all 70 multiple-choice questions and 30 minutes to perform all 5 randomly-selected nursing procedures in front of a nurse aide evaluator. Only those who are able to pass both tests will receive a certificate from the state’s Board of Nursing.
If a candidate fails, he can immediately reapply and reschedule for another try at the exam that he or she failed. This state doesn’t have any limit on how many times a candidate can retake the exam. However, they must pass both tests within 2 years after the first time they took the exam. If they fail to get certified within that time, then they will have to undergo retraining.
