What is a Certified Nurse Aide?
This is a trained individual that helps nurses provide nursing and nursing-related care to individuals who are in different health care settings like hospitals, long-term care facilities, assisted living centers, nursing homes, rehabilitation clinics, and other similar facilities.
What does it take to be a CNA?
Each state has its own requirements to be a certified nurse aide. This often involves the successful completion of a state-approved training program and passing the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination (NNAAP exam). Other similar requirements that Virginia has with other states include:
– Age: must be at least 16 years old
– Health: must be free of any communicable diseases and be physically healthy to take care of the patients
– Educational Background: must be able to read and write. Some programs require applicants to have a high school diploma or a GED certificate.
– Criminal Background: background checks are mandatory for all aspiring nurse aides. No student nurse aide is allowed to handle a patient without passing the criminal background checks first.
– English Competency: this is a big MUST, since most patients will be speaking English.
What will you learn in a CNA Training Program?
All programs in the state are only required to offer at least 75 hours of lectures and supervised clinical practice. Most programs can be completed within 2 to 6 months of continuous training, especially for facility-based programs. You can find a suitable program offered by different institutions and schools. There are even some websites that are allowed to offer the theory portion of the training online.
How do you apply for the NNAAP exam?
Students will receive an application packet from their instructors at the end of their training. The packet will contain the application form as well as instructions on how to apply. It will also contain the complete address of where the forms should be sent. Just make sure that all the requirements are complete before sending them. Incomplete applications are not processed by the NACES and Pearson VUE.
Taking the NNAAP Exam
As soon as your application is processed, the NACES will send you detailed instructions about your certification exam. Please arrive at least 30 minutes before the actual schedule exam. Latecomers are no longer allowed to enter the testing area once an exam and begun. You will also need to bring a copy of your SS card and a valid government-issued ID.
The NNAAP exam consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a random skills evaluation. Both tests are taken on the same day at a Regional Testing Center. Candidates must pass both tests to receive a certification that’s issued by the Board of Nursing.
