There are two general ways in order to become a nursing assistant in New York. One is to apply for reciprocity while the other is to challenge the competency evaluation exams in order to gain entry into the NAR.
The process of reciprocity is only available to those who are currently a registered nursing assistant in a different state. Aside from being currently registered, a good standing with his state is also a requirement. Before a nursing facility is able to hire a nursing assistant from a different state, it must verify that the applicant has applied to the New York Nurse Aide Registry. The facility may employ the nursing assistant so long as the nursing facility keeps a copy of the application form that was sent to the NY NAR and that the Registry verifications came back with positive results. NAR verifications are available 24 hours every day and can be done through:
• Visiting www.prometric.com/NurseAide/NY
• Calling the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) at (800) 918-8818
• By dialing the number provided above, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern time, and asking to talk to a live operator.
If the nursing assistant plans on entering the Registry by taking the license exams, the candidate must be able to pass both the written/oral exam and the skills evaluation tests. Every applicant is allowed to take the exams up to three times. If the candidate fails three times, the candidate will be required to undergo retraining before he is allowed to retake the exams.
The exam results are often received by mail one to two weeks from the exam date. If the candidate fails to receive the score report by then, the candidate will need to call Prometric at (800) 805-9128. Please keep in mind that for security purposes the exam results will not be given through the phone. If the request for a duplicate score report is file within 30 days from the date of issue, because of nonreceipt, there will be no additional fees to be paid.
