Training is always important and a basic requirement for any career in health care. To be a nursing aide, you must complete a state-certified CNA course to gain the proper knowledge and skills needed to function properly as a nursing aide. These courses are offered in community colleges, high schools, private training facilities, nursing homes, hospitals, and even online.
Approved courses are required by the state to offer 75 hours of training. These hours are divided into theories and clinical practice. During that time, you will be supervised by a nurse aide instructor which is a registered nurse that is qualified to supervise and train nursing aide students. As a student, you will learn basic concepts like personal care, elimination, nutrition, body mechanics, communication skills, infection control, safety, emergency protocols, and many more.
By completing an approved route, you will be eligible to apply for the competency exam. There are other routes that are available such as completing a training program in another state, graduating from a nursing educational program, and completing a refresher course. The main benefit of completing a N.C. training course is that you will be allowed to as an uncertified nursing aide for a maximum of 4 months.
To work long-term as a nursing aide, your name must be entered on the NAR. The only way to do this is to pass the competency exam. CNAs from other states who want to transfer must also take this test. To get into the Registry, candidates must pass both the written/oral test and the clinical skills evaluation.
CNA certifications are only valid for 24 months. To keep on working as a nursing aide, you must renew it before it expires. Expired certifications can no longer be renewed. Nursing aides with expired licenses will have to undergo retraining and retesting to get back on the NAR. To be eligible for renewal, you must work for at least 8 hours while under the supervision for a registered nurse. You should also be paid for the nursing aide services that you did for your work to be conserved qualified. Nursing aide certification renewal is free.
