The state of California does not allow nurse aides to work without a certification license. To get one you will need to take CNA classes from a state licensed school and take a set amount of hourly instruction. Classes will include 48 hours of instruction. Some online programs are available, however only 24 hours may be gained from a CDPH approved online course with the rest coming from a hands-on training facility. After you complete the class your school administrators should be able to help you schedule a time to take the competency exams.
According to the Omnibus Reconciliation Act of Act of 1987, all nursing assistants must be properly certified in order to work in an approved health care facility. If you have not been certified before as a nursing assistant, then you are required to take both the knowledge test and the skills evaluation exam of the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam.
The first part of the NNAAP exam is the knowledge test. Candidates can take this test either as a written or oral exam. Regardless of which, both tests will have 70 items and candidates will have a total of 2 hours to answer all questions. One of the main differences between the two is that the oral exam is divided into two parts. The first part is the basic knowledge test while the second part will test the candidate’s capability of understanding Basic English.
In the skills evaluation exam candidates will be asked to perform 5 nursing skills and procedures in front of an evaluator. The first of the skills will always be performing proper hand-washing while the rest will be randomly selected from a given set list. You can see all the skills that may come out in the Candidate Handbook. To pass this portion of the exam, candidates must perform all skills and procedures with 80% competency.
A candidate will only be certified if he is able to pass both parts of the exam. Normally, the results of the exams are received on the same day. If a candidate fails in one part, he can immediately reapply and retake the NNAAP exam. During that time, he will only be required to pay and take the test that he failed.
All candidates for the NNAAP exam are required to complete an approved training program. The best way to establish eligibility is by attending and completing a CDPH-approved NATP. RNs, LPNs, military-trained medics and corpsmen, and nursing students and graduates are also allowed to apply without any need for additional training.
COCCO has contracted Pearson VUE to assist in the conducting, scoring, and releasing of the results of the exam. You can visit their website at www.pearsonvue.com to get a copy of the application packet or download the Candidate Handbook, which provides detailed information about the NNAAP examination.
If you are a current holder of a license that was issued from a different state then you can apply for reciprocity. When applying, your name should still have an active status in your previous state’s Nurse Aide Registry. You must not have records that may prevent you from working in California like negligence or malpractice. You are also required to pass the background check done by the federal and the state. If you want to know other means of working in the state as a nursing assistant, you can call the CA Nurse Aide Registry at 916-327-2445.
