There are a number of requirements that must be done in order to become a certified nursing assistant. The first part of becoming certified is often the most difficult for some. This step involves looking for a state-approved CNA training program that is suitable to your preferences. You can train in institutions that uses an approved curriculum like those developed by the American Health Care Association or the Nebraska Health Care Association.
When you enroll, you will be spending your time in the classroom for theories and in the clinical area for your practical training. Once you complete your training, you will be able to apply for the CNA certification exam. Nursing students may also apply directly without any need for additional training because a nursing education program already meets the required training to apply.
The certification exam is divided into two parts. The first part is the multiple-choice knowledge test. All candidates will take this part simultaneously and will be given only 90 minutes to answer all 75 questions. The test questions till be taken from different nursing concepts that include:
• Safety
• Communication and Interpersonal skills
• Infection control
• Basic Rights
• Busing Nursing Care and Personal Care
• Roles and Responsibilities of a Nursing Assistant
• Physical Health and Illness
• Mental Health and Illness
• Aging Process
The second portion of the examination is the skills test. Here, you and the other candidates will be tested individually. You will be placed in a scenario where you will have to perform 5 nursing skills in front of an evaluator. The evaluator will base your performance score on the steps you do for each skill. To pass this test, you will have to perform all skills satisfactorily. You will only have a maximum of 30 minutes to perform all skills. To view a complete list of the nursing skills that may come out of the exam, please download a copy of the Candidate Handbook by going to www.headmaster.com.
If you pass all the tests, your name will be added to the Nurse Aide Registry and you will receive your certification. Employers will only hire nursing assistants whose names are found on the NAR. Unlike some states, your CNA certification will only remain valid for 24 months. To keep it current, you must renew it by going online at https://ifmc.sd.gov/. One of the requirements for renewal is that you must be able to work as a nursing assistant for at least 8 hours and get paid for it. Renewal of CNA certification in South Dakota is free.
