Becoming a nursing assistant is one of the best ways to start in health care. In order to work as a nursing assistant in California, you must first be certified. The certification process in this state is both quick and exciting, not to mention challenging.
A nursing assistant candidate is required by both federal and state to complete an approved CNA training program. Training will consist of classroom instructions and clinical practice while under the supervision of a qualified clinical instructor. It will take a minimum of 150 hours of training to complete a program. Their curriculum will include 16 required modules that will cover infection control, mental health, nutrition, basic nursing procedures, personal care, promoting patient safety, emergency procedures, and many more.
Before an NATP student is allowed to proceed to the practical portion of the training, the training facility must first submit a copy of the Request for Live Scan Services for each student to the Aide and Technician Certification Section. Students will have to get fingerprinted in California for the criminal background check.
Upon completion of training, a candidate will be allowed to apply for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program examination or the NNAAP exam. This exam is conducted and scored by Pearson VUE. If a candidate passes the knowledge exam and the practical skills test, he will receive a CNA certificate within a few days from the ATCS. CNA certificates are made up of special stock paper with several security features to assure its authenticity. This certificate is only valid for 24 months and must be renewed before it expires.
California offers reciprocity to certified nursing assistants from other states. Applicants must have a clean record and a current certificate. If the applicant has been certified for more than 2 years, he or she will be required to provide proof of employment as a nursing assistant. Applicants through this process are still required to pass the national background check for criminal records, which is done through the Live Scan Services.
