If you want to take care of patients and a nursing assistant, you must first get your license. You can get your license once you pass both parts of the state license exams. Before you can take the exams you must first complete a CNA training classes and pass the routine background check.
Taking the competency evaluation exam is one of the ways for you to start working as a nursing assistant in any state. The other option is by applying for reciprocity, which is only available for nursing assistants who are already on a Nurse Aide Registry and simply want to transfer and work in a different state.
The competency exam or the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program consists of either a written and skills evaluation exam or an oral and a skills evaluation exam. The applicant has the power to choose whether or not he will take the written or oral exam as his first part of the evaluation license exam. This can be done by simply submitting a letter of request along with the application letter to take the test.
When taking the exams, the candidates are expected to arrive at least 30 minutes before the actual scheduled time. This is to give them time to prepare in case they forgot some requirements. If you fail to arrive on time, you will no longer be allowed to enter the examination area and take the exams. You will also not receive any refunds for the fees that you paid.
Checking in for both exams is a requirement; that is why every candidate is required to bring proper identifications on the day of the exam. Proper ID that can be used when checking in includes driver’s license, photo credit card, passport, SS card, or an alien registration card. It is important that the name on your card should be the same as the name you used on the application form. If you changed your name, you must bring additional proof of your name change such as a marriage license or a divorce decree.
To get into the registry, you must pass both portions of the exam. Normally, the test results are faxed for scoring and the results are released on the same day. If there are any problems with the system, your tests will be mailed to Pearson VUE for manual checking. Please allow 5-7 working days for the results to be sent in.
If you passed, you will receive in the mail your license along with a wallet card. If you fail, you will get another 2 attempts to pass. You will also be advised by your training program on which area/s you need improvement. Failing for the 3rd time means that you must undergo retraining before you can retake the exam.
