To work as a certified nursing assistant in California, you must be able to pass the state’s certification exam. This exam consists of a written/oral test and a clinical skills evaluation. You will have 2 hours to answer all multiple-choice questions and 25 minutes to perform 5 randomly selected nursing skills. In order to get certified, you will have to pass both parts of the certification exam.
The certification exam is only available to those who have successfully completed a state-approved training program. You can qualify for the certification exam through the following routes:
• Completing a 150-hour CNA program
• Completing a Nursing Education Program
• Completing a Military training program for medics or corpsmen
CNA programs in California consist of 50 hours of classroom instructions and 100 hours of supervised clinical practice. Approved programs are headed by registered nurses with background experiences in teaching adults. Students are taught 16 different modules that would cover, but are not limited, to the following concepts:
• Patient’s Rights

If you are able to pass all the tests, the ATCS will mail you your nurse aide certificate within 10 days after passing. This certificate will prove that you are a competent nursing assistant and that you have met the federal and state’s training and testing requirements.
Unlike certain states, CNA certifications in California are only valid for 24 months. If you wish to maintain your eligibility to work in a state-approved healthcare facility, then you must renew your certification before it expires. The ATCS will send a notice at least 4 months before your certification’s expiration. To be eligible for renewal, you must work as a paid certified nurse aide for at least 8 hours and complete 48 hours of continuing education.
