A CNA certification is a requirement to work as a nurse aide in California. The Aide and Technician Certification Section of the Certification and Licensing Program is responsible for certifying nurse aides in this state. There are two ways to get certified in California. You can either challenge the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program examination or apply for reciprocity.
Challenging the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination or NNAAP exam
The NNAAP exam was developed to create a standard for aspiring nurse aides throughout the United States. The examination consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. Candidates must pass all the tests to get certified.
To be eligible to apply for the NNAAP exam, you must successfully complete an approved training course. The best way to establish eligibility is to enroll in a state-approved CNA training program that is approved by the CDPH. You can find approved programs offered by different institutions such as nursing homes, hospitals, assisted living facilities, vocational and technical colleges, and private training centers. There are also some websites that offer free online training.
Training programs in this state offer 150 hours of training. The hours are divided into 50 hours of lectures and 100 hours of clinical practice. Students are placed under the care of qualified registered nurses, who have backgrounds in instructing adults. Most training programs in the state can be completed within 2-6 months of training.
As soon as you are through, you can then submit your completed application form (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070508.pdf). When submitting, please do not forget to include the payment fee of $90 for both the written/oral knowledge test and the skills evaluation exam. Incomplete applications are not processed.
Candidates are only given 3 chances to pass all the tests. The three attempts are only valid within 2 years after completing one’s training. If you fail to get certified within 3 attempts or within 2 years after completing your training, you will be required to complete another training program before you can reapply.
Applying through Reciprocity
The process of reciprocity is only valid for individuals who are already certified as a nurse aide in another state. If they wish to apply, they must have a valid certification and no previous records of patient abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of a patient’s property. All applicants are required to provide proof of education and training and employment, if the applicant has been certified for more than 2 years. For more information call the CDPH at (916) 327-2445.
