If you are looking for a way to enter the field of healthcare, you should think about becoming a nursing aide. This profession is very in-demand today and is considered to be one of the most practical ways to start a career in the field.
To work as a nursing aide in California, you must be certified by the Aide and Technician Certification Section. You can get certified by passing all the tests in the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program examination. The NNAAP exam consists of a 70-item multiple-choice written (oral) exam and a skills evaluation exam. The state has authorized Pearson VUE to help conduct the exam and release the results.
This exam is only available to individuals who have received proper education and training from CDPH-approved programs. One reason why this profession is so practical is that there are different routes that you can take to establish eligibility. You can complete any of the following routes:
• Complete a 150-hour CNA course
• Gain Military Education as a medic or corpsman
• Attend or Complete a Nursing Education Program
• Completing other similar and health-related courses
Completing a CNA training course will automatically make you eligible to apply for the exam. If you complete a similar training program, you must first contact the CDPH to determine your eligibility. You may be required to provide proof of education and training such as a diploma or your transcript of records.
The State of California offers reciprocity to certified nursing aides from other states. Reciprocity will allow applicants to transfer their certification from their states to California. It is important that applicants must have a valid certification and a clean record when applying. Applicants who are listed in the Abuse Registry will not be allowed to work in a CDPH-approved healthcare facility.
CNA certifications in California are only valid for 24 consecutive months. Nursing aides are required to find at least 8 hours of paid employment and complete 48 hours of in-service/CE. When completing the in-service/CE, only take training or continuing education units CDPH-approved training facilities or programs. If you fail to meet these requirements, you will be ineligible to renew your certification. No nursing aide is allowed to continue working with an expired certification.
