health-care-student-trainee-speaking-with-instructorThere are plenty of opportunities for people who would like to become a CNA in California. There are general steps that all students would have to go through to become certified such as completing a training program, passing the state license exams, and passing the federal and the state background checks and criminal record clearance. Keep in mind that each training institution will have different requirements upon enrollment. However, in general you will need to pass a state and federal background check. Go through a physical exam and submit a fingerprint card and immunization records. Once you have enrolled in a program you will learn about the job and get hands-on experience practicing the skills you will use.

Requirements to become an HHA/CNA

To work as a nurse aide or a home health aide, you must be properly certified. The Aide and Technician Certification Section is in-charge of certifying such individuals in California. The certification process in this state begins with enrolling in a CDPH-certified training program and ends in challenging the certification exam.

NATP/HHA Training Programs

Approved nurse aide programs are required to offer 150 hours of training. A hundred (100) of the hours are allotted for supervised practical training, while the remaining 50 hours are for classroom lectures. Students will spend 16 hours learning about infection control, patients’ rights and independence, interpersonal skills, and safety and emerge procedures before handling any patient.

HHA training is offered in two- 120-hour training programs and 40-hour training programs. The 40-hour programs are only offered to those who are training to become a nurse aide and a home health aide at the same time. The training that the students will receive from the HHA program will be supplemental to your CNA training

Certification Exam

After completing an NATP, the nurse aide candidate will become eligible to apply for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program examination or the NNAAP exams. This exam consists of two parts – the written/oral knowledge test and a skills evaluation. If a candidate passes all the tests, he will get certified by the ATCS.

Renewing HHA/NA Certificates

Both home health aides and nursing aide certificates are only valid for 2 years. Holders must renew them before they expire to keep their eligibility to work. Once a certificate expires it can no longer be renewed, but it can be reactivated by taking a competency evaluation exam.

Both the nurse aide and the HHA are required to get work for at least 8 hours. They are also required to do in-service training or continuing education. CNAs must complete a total of 48 hours while home health aides are only required for 24 hours. Their training or education must be properly recorded on this form: http://www.cdph.ca.gov/pubsforms/forms/CtrldForms/CDPH283a.pdf.
