As part of the Nursing Home Reform Act, if you want to start working as a nursing aide, you must meet both the state and federal training and testing requirement. To be able to apply for the exam, you must complete an OSBN-approved program. The curriculum of these programs consists of 75 hours of classroom lectures and another 75 hours of clinical duties. Before you can graduate from the program, you will also have to pass the final exam.
Once you complete your training, you can then fill-up the certification by examination application packet and send it to the Oregon State Board of Nursing at 17938 SW Upper Boones Ferry Road, Portland, OR 97224-7012. Along with the required documents, you will also have to send the initial testing fee of $106 and the fingerprint processing fee of $52. If it is not your initial testing and you still need to take both exams, you will only need to pay $70. IF you want to take the oral version of the knowledge tests, you will need to send an additional $35.
If you have a preferred date to take the exam, you must make sure that you submit your complete application packet at no less than 21 days before your preferred date. On the day of the exam, you must arrive at 30 minutes before the actual scheduled time. Late comers will no longer be allowed to take the tests.
Another important thing to remember on the exam date is to bring two types of valid ID. The name on the ID must match the name that you placed on your application form. The IDs must be current and have your signature on it. You may use your driver’s license passport, alien registration card, SS card, credit card, or even your High school ID. If you have any additional questions about the exam, you can call Headmaster at (800) 393-8664.
The test results are mailed to your address as soon as they have been double-checked by the Headmaster scoring team. This will usually arrive 10 business days from your exam date. If you took the knowledge exam with WebEtests, you can get the results on the same day.
Once you pass all of the tests, your name will be added to the Registry and you will receive your license. Practicing as a nursing aide without a certification is against Oregon law. Violation of this law may result in a civil penalty that may reach up to $5,000.
