Before you will be allowed to work in the state as a nursing assistant, you will need to receive the proper training first in order to be able to take care of the patients properly. When you join a program, your training will start off with classroom instructions and skills training. Afterwards, you will then go to the clinical area for your duties. When you are there, you will be placed under the care of a registered nurse or another member of the healthcare team. If you are able to complete your training from a state-approved training program, you will be allowed to work as a nursing assistant in a hospital or a nursing home for up to 4 months. If you wish to continue your work, then you must be able to pass the CNA license exams within that time.
Once you are through with your training, you will become eligible to apply for the license exams. This rule also applies to nurses who wish to become CNAs. Since the training is very similar, there will be no need to undergo any additional instruction as long as you meet the minimum hours requirement. You can contact the registry at (207-287-1133) to receive additional advice. For those that are nursing assistants from a different state, they are still welcome to work in Maine. All they have to do is to apply for reciprocity for them to be able to work there. They should be still be registered and have good relationships with the state they come from when they apply. The applicants will also be required to submit a completed application form as we all documents proving their training and experience.
