If you are planning on working in a Medicaid-certified nursing facility as a CNA, then you will have to get certified. In South Carolina, you can only be certified as a nurse aide if your name is added to the Nurse Aide Registry. This means that you will have to take on and pass all the tests in the certification exam.
The SC Department of Health and Human Services has authorized Pearson VUE to develop, score, and release the results of the certification exam. The exam is divided into a multiple-choice knowledge test and a skills evaluation. Each candidate will be given only 3 attempts to pass all the tests. A failure in one portion means a failed certification exam. You can reapply for the exam 45 days after and retake the part that you failed. If you still fail the 3rd attempt, you will have to undergo retraining before you can reapply.
The certification exam is only available to those who have completed the necessary training. You can become eligible by completing a 100-hour training course that is approved by the SCDHHS, or complete the Fundamentals of Nursing as a graduate RN or LPN. Medics who have been trained in the Military may apply if they are deemed eligible. Before sending their applications, medics must send their transcripts to scnar@scdhhs.gov for review.
Since it will be your first time to take the tests, you will have to take both parts of the exam. You will need to send a payment of $101 for the testing fees. The payment should only be in the form of a money order, cashier’s check, company check, or Pearson VUE voucher. Personal checks will not be accepted and incomplete applications will not be processed. If you are retaking the tests, your payment will be based on which exam you are taking. Oral and written exam costs $30, while the skills exam costs $71.
Once certified, you will be allowed to work as a CNA for 2 years. If you fail to work for at least 8 hours as a nurse aide, you will not be allowed to renew your certification. A lapsed certification will be considered expired. No nurse aide is allowed to work with an expired certification. If you still want to work as a nurse aide after your certification has expired, you will need to complete another 100-hour training program and pass the certification exam again.
