To work as a nurse aide in Oklahoma, you must get your name on the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. There are two general ways to get into the NAR. The first part is by applying for reciprocity. This process is only offered to individuals who are already CNAs that are listed in another state’s NAR. When applying for reciprocity, the applicants must provide proof of their education, training, and experience. It is also important that their certification must still be active upon applying. All applicants will also be required to pass the criminal background checks, which will be done in both federal and state level.

The second way, and is considered the usual way, is by challenging the state competency exam. Through this way, you can be listed in the NAR as either a long term care aide or a home health aide. The competency exams for the two of them are largely the same.

Both exams consist of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a clinical skills evaluation. The knowledge test will have a total of 72 items. You will be given a maximum of 90 minutes to answer. It may either be taken in its written or oral version. The skills evaluation exams for both certifications are also similar. In both exams, the candidate will be asked to perform 5 nursing procedures in front of a nurse aide evaluator. The time allotted for the LTCA competency exam is only 35 minutes, where as in the HHA exam, the candidates are given 45 minutes to perform all the procedures. Regardless of which exam, all candidates will only be given 3 attempts to pass all the tests and get certified. In addition, the candidates must also be certified within 2 years of the completion of their training. When retaking the exams, the candidates will only need to take the test that they failed. If they fail to be certified within 3 attempts and within 2 years after completing their training, they will be required to reenroll in another program before they can apply again.

A LTCA and a HHA certification are only valid for 2 years. The holder must renew them before their expiration date. The expiration dates in Oklahoma usually fall on the same day as when the nurse aide’s name was entered in the NAR. Nurse aides must work for a minimum of 8 hours every 24 consecutive months, to be eligible for renewal.
