Taking on the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam is the only way for an individual, who has never been certified as CAN, to get into the South Carolina Nurse Aide Registry. All new CNA candidates who are applying to challenge the NNAAP exam must complete a 100-hour nurse aide training program that is approved by the SC Department of Health and Human Services. These 100 hours will already include 40 hours of clinical practice. If a candidate is already hired as a nurse aide or has received an offer of employment from a Medicaid-certified health care facility, then his training and testing will be sponsored by his employer.
A nurse aide who has done out-of-state training may seek certification in South Carolina by testing. To be eligible, he must have completed a training program that also offers 100 hours of training. When applying of the exams, the nurse aide must provide proof of training by showing a copy of his diploma or certificate of completion of training.
An LPN, RN, or Military-trained medic may also apply for the exams. Before applying, the candidate must first send a copy of his credentials, to the SCDHHS at scnar@scdhhs.gov. Those who undergone a training curriculum that is similar to those offered in South Carolina may get approved.
When applying, please fill out the application forms accurately. The forms can be acquired from your training instructor or by downloading them from http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/074101.pdf. Please make sure to place all requirements in a single envelope before sending. Incomplete applications will not be processed. All applications must be sent to:

The NNAAP exams consist of a written knowledge test and a random skills evaluation. The knowledge test may also be given in its oral version for those who have problems in reading English. Please take note that there will be no extra payments when requesting to have an oral exam. To get into the NAR, candidates must pass all the tests within 3 attempts and within 2 years of completing training.
