One of the best ways to start a career in this field is to become a nursing assistant.

Nursing assistants are very in demand not just in this state, but all over the United States. They can be found working in almost any healthcare facility that you can think of. Nursing assistants are entry-level professionals, which makes it easier and quicker to become one.

The first thing that you’ll need to do is to look for a Nursing Assistant Program or NAP to enroll in. The Department of Social and Health Services monitors all programs that are offered in the state to ensure that the students receive proper training and education. When looking for a program, you just have to make sure that it’s approved by the DSHS before you enroll.

Approved training programs are required to offer at least 35 hours of classroom lectures and laboratory work, and 50 hours of supervised clinical practice. Students are supervised by a qualified CNA instructor during the entire training period. Students will learn about important topics such as infection control, basic nursing care, safety and emergency procedures, personal care, interpersonal skills, patients’ rights and independence, and many more.

Changing careers is no easy task, but that’s what makes becoming a nursing assistant so great. Nursing facilities are allowed to hire a person as a nursing assistant, even without a NA certificate. The person is then given a maximum of 120 days to complete a training program, pass the NNAAP exam, and apply to get into the Nurse Aide Registry. During the training period, the trainee isn’t allowed to perform any procedure or skill that hasn’t been taught in the classroom.

The NNAAP exam is a two part examination that consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a practical skills exam. The knowledge test is initially given as a written exam, but a candidate who has trouble reading can request for an oral exam instead. Candidates can also request for special accommodations for certain disabilities that they might have.

Once you get a CNA certificate, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to further your career. You can get advance certifications, or use your experience as a nursing assistant as a stepping stone to aim for a higher degree.
