If you want to work as a nursing assistant, you will have to be certified. The certification process for Oregon will begin as soon as you establish eligibility to take the nursing assistant 1 competency evaluation exam. The most common way of doing this is by completing an OBSN-approved nursing assistant 1 training program. The completing can take 4-6 months to complete, depending on which program you enroll in.
Medics and military corpsmen can also apply for the exam if they were able to work 400 hours within the last 24 months. The 400 hours is approximately 3 months of full-time duty, but accumulated part-time duty hours are also considered.
The written exam consists of a multiple-choice written exam, which is also offered in oral form for those with problems with written English. The second portion of the exam is the clinical skills evaluation. The applicant will be asked to perform randomly-selected nursing tasks in front of a nursing assistant evaluator.
If you pass all the tests, your name will be automatically added to the Oregon State Nurse Aide Registry. Your license will arrive at the address you provided 10 business days from your exam date. If you fail, you will receive your test results indicating the area(s) you need improvement.
Each applicant is given 3 attempts to pass all the exams. These attempts are only valid for 2 years from the completion of their training. If you fail the third attempt, you will be required by the Board to enroll again in a state-approved program before you can retake the exam.
If you feel that you want to climb up the career ladder, you can train and become a CNA 2. There are three types of nursing assistant 2 and each of the types has its own focus of duties. Nursing assistant 2 programs require you to complete 30 hours of training. To get your nursing assistant 2 certification, you must pass the competency exam.
