Becoming a nursing assistant is a great way for you to enter into the medical field. It may be a wonderful stepping stone if you ever want to proceed to a much higher degree and will provide you will valuable experience for your resume. The completion of a CNA program is one of the most important steps in becoming a nursing assistant. By completing a training program, you will be able to apply for the state competency exams.
When you are selecting for a program to enroll in, you should only chose one that is approved by the state, since this ensures you will be allowed to apply for the license exams afterwards. You can find these programs all over the state being offered by different institutions. As a student, you will be taught different nursing concepts like infection control, mental health, medical terms, and rehabilitation. You will also be trained on the different nursing skills like assisting in bathing, dressing, feeding, ambulating, performing ROM exercises, and even emergency procedures. Approved programs offer 40 hours of instruction with practical experience in the basics of nursing and real experience in a health care facility setting. What you will learn during your training will be tested during the exams.
The competency exams for this state are composed of a written and a skills evaluation. In order to get your name entered in the state’s online registry, you have to pass both exams. Every applicant is given three tries to pass the exams. If you fail for the third time, you must then undergo retraining before you can retake the exams. Individuals can contact the registry’s help desk at 217-785-5133, from the hours of 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday to get additional information about current requirements.
