One cannot work in California as a nursing aide without a nurse aide certification. To get a license, your name must be entered in the state’s nursing aide registry list. It will only be entered there if you have completed the necessary requirements such as taking CNA classes that are licensed by the state and pass the competency exams. To verify if a course is approved by the state you can call the (TPRU) Training Program Review Unit at (916) 552-8873.
The main goal of the Nursing Home Reform Act is to provide better quality care to patients in nursing homes and other healthcare facilities. In order to help meet this goal, all nursing assistants are now required to complete a state-approved Nurse Aide Training Program or NATP and pass the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program.
NATPs are there to help aspiring nursing assistant candidates learn the roles and responsibilities of a nursing assistant as well as the needed skills and knowledge to perform those responsibilities. NATPs in California offer a minimum of 150 hours of training. Like the programs in other states, their curriculum consists of classroom lessons and supervised clinical practice.
General requirements to be enrolled in a state-approved NATP include the following:
• Must be at least 18 years old
• Must be able to read, write, and understand Basic English
• Must at least have a high school diploma
• Must be physically capable of taking care of patients of different sizes
• Must have completed all necessary immunizations
• Must have a clean criminal record.
Prior to the start of the clinical rotation of the training program, all students are fingerprinted. The fingerprints are used for the criminal background checks done through the Live Scan Services. No student is allowed to handle any patient without undergoing the background checks. Background checks are done at both federal and state levels.
Completing an approved NATP will make you eligible to apply for the NNAAP exam. This exam was created to determine and establish a standard competency for all nursing assistants throughout the United States. Candidates will take a multiple-choice knowledge test and a clinical skills evaluation. Passing all tests will get you certified. Only certified nursing assistants are allowed to work in a CDPH-approved nursing facility in California.
Since registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, and military-trained medics have similar training to the one student nursing assistants receive, they are allowed to apply for the NNAAP exam directly. When applying they will be asked to provide proof of education and training such as a diploma or a transcript of records.
The NNAAP exam in California is handled by Pearson VUE. If you wish to know more about the exam, please visit their site at www.pearsonvue.com or call (800) 475-8290. For all other questions, please contact the CDPH at (916) 327-2445 or visit www.cdph.ca.gov.
The license exams enable you to become certified and listed on the registry. You should remember that your license will expire every 2 years and must be renewed before then if you wish to continue your work as a nursing aide. For any questions you may have about the registry and its requirements you can call the CDPH at (916) 327-2445.
