Nursing assistants perform routine tasks that are delegated by licensed nurses and members of the medical staff. They mainly do basic and repetitive tasks such as vital signs taking and assisting the residents in their daily activities like dressing, cleaning, toileting, feeding, bathing, and many more. Before you handle any residents, it is important that you know how to properly perform the tasks and duties of a nursing assistant.

The first step in becoming a nursing assistant is to choose a suitable training program to enroll in. Each program has its own way of implementing the different requirements of the OBRA of 1987.  Many of the programs require their students to be at least 18 years old, possess a clean record, complete immunizations, pass the national background check, and be physically and mentally capable of handling the patients.

During training you will be placed under the care of qualified CNA instructors. These are registered nurses with at least 2 years of nursing experience and possess background experience in teaching and training adults or CNA students. In 6-12 weeks, at the end of your training, you will learn different concepts of the Fundamentals of Nursing like infection control, therapeutic communication and interpersonal skills, respecting the residents’ rights, promoting their independence, and many more.

By completing a state-approved program, you will be able to apply for the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program examination. This exam is the only way for those who haven’t been certified as a nursing assistant yet to get into the Nurse Aide Registry. Once you are on the NAR, you will receive your certification. This exam is divided into a written/oral exam and a skills evaluation. All candidates must pass both parts to get certified.

Once certified, your name will remain on the NAR for 2 years. During that time, you can find work as a nursing aide in a Medicaid-certified nursing facility. To keep your name on the NAR, you must renew it before your certification expires. A requirement for renewal is to provide proof that you were able to work for at least 8 hours as a paid CNA, while being supervised by a licensed nurse.
