Before you are allowed to take care of patients, you must first learn all the things that you will need to know to take care of them properly. You must first enroll in a CNA training program. While in the program, you will learn things like the basic nursing skills and emergency procedures. If you complete the program, you can then try to take on the state license examination.
Among the different classifications of nursing assistants, the CMA is one of the most popular kinds. A CMA or a certified medication aide is an advance certification, where there nursing assistant will be trained to give to the patients, while still under the supervision of the nurses, selected medications such as pills, inhalers, ointments, creams, lotions, patches, nebulized medications, and many more –except injectable medications.
To be listed on the registry as a CMA, you will have to pass the CMA evaluation exam. This exam consists only of a written knowledge test. Candidates are given three attempts to pass. If they fail after three attempts, they will have to undergo retraining.
Before you can take the exam, you will need to complete a 57.5-hour training program. During your training, you will be under the supervision of a qualified CMA instructor. To qualify as an instructor, you must be a physician, a licensed nurse, or a pharmacist with a minimum of 1 year experience in your respective field. An LPN can also be an instructor, only if the RN is designated as the program’s training supervisor.
To qualify in the training program, you must first be on the Nurse Aide Registry as a LTC, HHA, or a DDA. You should be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or a GED, and possess at least 6 months of working experience as a CNA. These base certifications will require their own respective training and testing. Many of the training facilities in the state however, offer multiple classes. It is also possible for you to be certified in more than one base certification.
CMA certifications are only valid for 12 months and must be renewed before it expires. To be eligible for renewal, you must get at least 8 hours of continuing education. Since this is an advanced certification, the holder’s must keep their base certifications active/valid.
