The first step in becoming a nursing assistant-certified or NAC is to enroll in a state-approved NATP. Nursing Assistant Training Programs can be found throughout the state. They are offered by hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living centers, community colleges, technical schools, government organizations, private institutions and many more.

Looking for a suitable program might be a bit confusing for some people since there are now a lot of programs to choose from. You’ll have to think carefully about this, but whatever you choose, you just have to make sure that the program you select is approved by the state’s Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS). This’ll make sure that you receive proper training and be able to proceed to the next step in becoming an NAC.

Approved programs consist of at least 35 hours of lectures and 50 hours of supervised clinical practice. Most programs can be completed within 6 months of continuous training. For those who are already working as nursing assistants without certifications, they must select a program that can be completed in less than 4 months.

Once you complete your training, you’ll now be able to apply for the NNAAP examination. This exam is a two part exam that comprises of a written/oral exam and a clinical skills test. Candidates must pass both tests in order to gain entry into the Nurse Aide Registry. Each candidate is given a maximum of 3 attempts to pass. If a candidate fails his 3rd attempt, then he will have to complete another NATP before he can reapply once again.

The Washington State Nurse Aide Registry contains all the names of individuals who are allowed to work in as NACs in any healthcare facility in Washington. Unlike some states, nursing assistants who are on the Registry must apply for a certificate from the state’s Department of Health. Names on the Registry as well as NAC certifications aren’t permanent. To keep your eligibility to work as an NAC, you’ll have to renew your certification every 2 years on or before your birthday. To qualify for renewal, you must provide proof that you were able to work as a paid nursing assistant-certified for at least 8 hours. The State of Washington doesn’t require completion of any continuing education. No nursing assistant is allowed to continue working with an expired certification.
