The first thing that you need to do to become a certified nurse aide is to enroll in a state-approved training program. It is important that you learn how to properly take care of the patients before working as a long-term nurse aide.

Approved training programs are required to consist of at least 65 hours of lectures and 55 hours of supervised clinical practice.  During the entire clinical training portion, students are handled by a clinical instructor who was trained to handle nurse aide students. All programs are required to last at least 4 weeks of continuous training. Students are taught about important topics such as infection control, communication skills, safety and emergency procedures, any many more.

Completing an approved training program is a requirement for qualifying for the State Competency Exam. If you quit or was dismissed from your training program, you’ll have to start and complete another program before you can apply for the State Exam. Nursing students who took up the Fundamentals of Nursing and have at least 32 hours of clinical training are allowed to apply for the State Exam even without completing a program.

The State Exam consists of a multiple-choice knowledge exam and a skills evaluation. Both tests are taken on the same day at a Regional Testing Center. Candidates who pass both tests will gain entry into the Nurse Aide Registry and will receive a CNA Certificate from the state. According to the law, only certified nurse aides are allowed to work in a certified Medicaid/Medicare health care facility.

Because of the high demand for nurse aides, even licensed nurses are now working as certified nurse aides. If you are a licensed nurse with an active license, you can work as a certified nurse aide in a healthcare facility without further training or testing. An RN can work as a nurse aide even if his or her name is not on the WV-NAR.

Names on the NAR are only valid for 2 years. Holders must renew their certification before it lapses/expires to keep their eligibility to work as a nurse aide. No CNA is allowed to continue working with a lapsed/expired certificate. You can qualify for renewal if you provide proof that you were able to work as a paid nurse aide within the last 2 years. A lapsed/expired certificate can be reactivated by completing the refresher course and taking the competency exam.
