If you are thinking of becoming a nursing assistant in Oregon, then you should start by finding a CNA 1 training program that is approved by the state’s Board of Nursing. Because of the high demand for this profession, you will have no problems looking for a training program to enroll in.

nurse-aide-practicing-procedures-on-dummyWhen you enroll, you will be spending a total of 75 hours for classroom lectures about the different nursing concepts and another 75 hours doing practical training in an actual clinical setting. Before you are allowed to handle the patients, you must cover 24 hours of lectures about basic care, therapeutic communication techniques, infection control, safety and emergency procedures, and assisting with ADLs. To graduate from the program, you will have to pass the final exam, which will test you in both skills and knowledge.

The completion of a training program will make you eligible to apply for the competency evaluation exam. The Headmaster Testing Service is the company that administers the testing in this state. Passing this exam is a very important step since it is one of the ways to get a CNA license and into the NAR. The exam will consist of a knowledge test, which is also offered in its oral version, and a clinical skills test. IF you want to get the oral exam or need any special considerations when taking the exam, you must inform the Registry during the submission of your application.

Nursing graduates and nursing assistant candidates who completed an approved training program in another state may apply for the exam without any additional training. They will be asked to provide proof of their education and training such as a copy of their diploma, transcript of records, or certification of completion of training.

A CNA certificate is valid for 24 months. Its expiration date will always fall on the holder’s date of birth. You will need to renew it before it expires since an expired license can only be reactivated by passing the competency exam again. You can either renew your license online (http’s: //Osborne. Oregon. Gov/OBNPortal/DesktopDefault.aspx? tabindex=0&tabid=5) or by filling out the renewal forms and send them to:

If you are planning to work as a nursing assistant in California, then it is important that you know what the requirements are for CNA certification in the state. Knowing what the requirements are, will help you prepare for your chosen career.

nurses-at-seminar-meetingThe first step in becoming a nursing assistant is to enroll in a state-approved CNA training program. Although each program has its own requirements for enrollment, most of them will only require applicants to have a high school diploma or a GED certificate.

The state-approved CNA programs must offer a minimum of 50 hours of classroom training and 100 hours of supervised clinical practice. The completion of a training program is a necessary step to be qualified to apply for the certification exam. Basic nursing skills are taught in the programs as well as several related concepts like nutrition, communication skills, patients’ rights, human anatomy, and medical terminologies. Depending on the program you choose to enroll in, it can take you 2 to 6 months to complete your training.

After completing a program, the next step is to submit your CNA Initial Application Form (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070503.pdf) to finalize your eligibility to apply for the certification exam. Once the ATCS receives your application, you can then submit your application for the certification exam (http://www.asisvcs.com/publications/pdf/070508.pdf) to the Regional Testing Center in your area.

You must have the authorization of the state to take the exams. The different requirements for the license exams include completing a state-approved training course, passing the background checks, as well as the application forms, ID photos, fingerprint cards, immunization records, and paying the fees for the exams.

The certification exam initially consists of a 70-item written test and a clinical skills evaluation. If a candidate has trouble reading English, he can request to take the oral version of the written test for an additional fee of $15. The fee for the written and skills test is $90. The payment must be sent along with the application or else the application won’t be processed.

Candidates who are able to pass all the tests will get their names entered into the Nurse Aide Registry. They will also receive a CNA certificate from the state’s Aide and Technician Certification Section. The certificate will prove that you are a competent nursing assistant. However, employers will still verify your certification before they hire you. You can check your own status as a certified nursing assistant by going online at http://www.apps.cdph.ca.gov/cvl/SearchPage.aspx.
