To work as a nursing assistant, one must get an NA Certification by applying for it through the DOH. You can only apply if your name is listed on the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. There are two general ways to get in the Nurse Aide Registry. You can either apply for endorsement or gain entry through testing.
Nursing Assistant Certification through Testing
The most common way of getting into the Nurse Aide Registry is by taking the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination. This exam is divided into a multiple-choice knowledge test and a practical skills test. Candidates who will pass both tests will gain entry into the registry. You can only take this exam if you were able to complete a state-approved training program.
Nursing Assistant Training Programs (NATPs) in this state are approved and monitored by the Department of Social and Health Services or DSHS. Every program must offer at least 85 hours of training. These hours are divided into 35 hours of theory and 50 hours of supervised clinical practice. Approved programs must also be headed by a registered nurse with at least 2 years of nursing experiences working in a long-term care facility.
Once you are through with your training the next step is to challenge the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Exam. This exam is divided into a written/oral test and a skills evaluation exam. Candidates must pass both tests in order to get certified. Both tests are conducted on the same day with the help of Pearson VUE.
CNA Endorsement
A nursing assistant from other states may work in Washington without the need for further testing. A nursing assistant who is listed on another state’s Registry and has an active certification may qualify for Interstate Endorsement. Endorsement applicants must also undergo and pass the national background checks. Those who are listed on the Abuse Registry are not allowed to work in a healthcare facility in the state. You can get an application form for Nursing Assistant Endorsement by following this site: http://www.doh.wa.gov/Portals/1/Documents/Pubs/667039.pdf.
Maintain Your Nursing Assistant Certification
Nursing assistant certifications in this state are only valid for one year. Holders must renew their certification to maintain their eligibility to work in a state-approved health care facility. Certified employees must work for at least 8 hours to qualify for renewal. The state does not require any continuing education for the renewal process. For more information regarding the renewal process, please follow this link: http://www.doh.wa.gov/LicensesPermitsandCertificates/ProfessionsNewReneworUpdate/LicenseRenewals.aspx.
