If you wish to become a nursing assistant in the state of Ohio, you must first learn all the skills and knowledge needed to take care of the patients. You can learn these skills when you enroll in a STNA training class. Once you enroll in a training program, you will then be trained in the skills that are required on the job as a nurses aide.
The program you must complete is a 75-hour training program that has been approved by the state. The training hours will be divided into 59 hours of clinical duties and 16 hours of classroom lectures. You will be trained in different concepts like infection control, medical terminologies, mental health, communication techniques and emergency procedures. With the high demand for state-tested nursing aides, these programs are now offered by different training institutions. You can try to enroll in community colleges, private training centers, nursing homes, and other long-term care facilities.
To be accepted in a program, you must be a high school graduate. You must also pass the mandatory criminal background checks, and be deemed physically competent in handling the patients. For those who were hired as a nursing aide by a healthcare facility, you will have an additional TB testing to pass. The TB testing will be done prior to your first day of work.
An individual who is not on the Nurse Aide Registry of Ohio is allowed to work as a nursing aide because of the state’s “4 month grace period”. If an individual changes his employer before 4 months and immediately works for a different or same employer, his grace period will still continue and will not reset.
To work for more than 4 months, an aspiring nursing aide must get his name on the state’s NAR. This is only done if you are able to pass the competency examinations or if you apply by reciprocity. If you are a nursing aide from a different state and applies for reciprocity, you will need to provide the following documents:
• Complete name
• Current address
• A copy of a government-issued ID or your CNA license
• A copy of your Social Security Card
• Contact information
• The states that you are registered as a nursing aide
Once you complete your training, you can then apply for and take on the state license exams. The exams have two portions which are a written and demonstration test. After you pass the exams and have your license, you will then be referred to as a STNA or state trained nursing assistant.
