To become eligible to take the license exams, you have to first finish a training program that is approved by the state. These programs are offered by different institutions like colleges, nursing homes, and community training centers. Most of the programs offered in the state can be completed within 6 months. Those who have taken nursing courses are also able to apply for the exams provided that they have taken up the fundamentals and met the required number of hours for clinical training. In addition to your completed coursework and submitted application you will need proof of your immunizations, fingerprint card, background check, valid identification and be free from any disqualifications such as a positive result of a TB test, or a criminal felony.
As a nursing assistant student, you will get a total of 120 hours of training. These hours will be divided into 80 hours of lecture on different nursing concepts like infection control, mental health, medical terms, rehabilitation, and communication skills. You will also have 40 hours of clinical training which will include the skills training, like assisting in ambulation, performing ROM exercises, doing bed bath, and help in other daily activities.
When you are applying for the exams, you will need to submit your application form which can be downloaded at https://www.prometric.com/en-us/clients/Nurseaide/Pages/ID.aspx. You will also be required to pass the federal and state background checks. If you have committed a disqualifying offense, it will greatly affect your application and chances to become a CNA.
