To work as a nursing aide in a Medicaid Nursing facility, you must be registered in the South Carolina Nurse Aide Registry. The Registry is a master list of all the nursing assistants who were able to meet the federal and state’s training and testing requirements.
One way to get into the NAR is by passing the certification exam. The state’s Department of Health and Human Services has contracted Pearson VUE to take charge of the exam. This testing company is helped by the Nurse Aide Competency Evaluation Services. The certification exam consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a random skills evaluation, which are given on the same day. To be certified, you must pass both portions of the exam within 3 attempts and within 2 years of completing training.
To become eligible to apply for the exams, you can complete a 100-hour state-approved program, take military education and training as a medic or corpsman, complete out-of-state nursing aide training, or take up and complete the Fundamentals of Nursing either as a licensed nurse or LPN. Aside from completing a state-approved CNA program, the other states are on a case to case basis. To be sure that you are eligible, please contact the Department of Health and Human Services at scnar@scdhhs.gov..
The second way of gaining entry into the SCNAR is by applying for reciprocity. This route however is only available to nursing assistants who are listed in another state. Applicants must have a valid license and be able to show proof of having completed a training program that is similar to the ones in South Carolina. To request for an application form, please visit www.pearsonvue.com or call (800) 475-8290.
Once you are listed, it will be your responsibility to keep your record on the Registry updated. Please inform NAR if you ever changed your name or address to avoid problems when you renew your certification. CNA certification must be renewed every 2 years before they expire. To be eligible for renewal, a nursing assistant must work for a minimum of 8 hours while under the supervision of a registered nurse.
