If you are thinking about becoming a nursing assistant, then it’s important that you know what the requirements are. Knowing the requirements will make the process quicker and much easier. Why? That’s because you can prepare for the different challenges that are ahead.
Requirement #1: Training
The state requires all aspiring nursing assistants to complete at least 35 hours of lectures and 50 hours of supervised clinical practice. NATP’s in Washington are monitored by the DSHS to ensure that they comply with the standards that were set by both the federal and the state. Depending on the program you choose to enroll in, it can take you from about 2 to 6 months to complete your training.
Requirement #2: Passing the National Background Checks for Criminal Records
As soon as you’re accepted into a program, you’ll be fingerprinted and subjected to the criminal background checks. The checks are done at federal and state levels. No student is allowed to take care of a patient without undergoing and passing the background checks. These checks are done in order to protect the patients.
Requirement #3: Taking the NNAAP Exam
As soon as you complete your training, you’ll be able to apply for the NNAAP exam. This examination consists of a multiple-choice knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. Both tests are conducted on the same day with the help of Pearson VUE. The names of all the candidates who will pass both tests will be entered into the Nurse Aide Registry.
The Nurse Aide Registry is the master list of all the nursing assistants who were able to meet the federal and state’s training and testing requirements. The individuals who are on the NAR are allowed to apply for an NA Certificate. You can verify your status on the NAR by calling (360) 725-2570.
Requirement #4: Applying for an NA Certificate
Nursing assistant certifications in Washington are issued by the Washington State Department of Health. This certificate will be useful when you go applying for work. Employers will always verify their applicants’ certificate before hiring them. They will also check the applicant’s status on the Nurse Aide Registry.
