A CNA certification is a requirement to work in the state of South Carolina as a nursing assistant. You can only get a nursing assistant certificate if you are able to get on the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. There are two ways for this to happen. The first is by applying for reciprocity and the other is through testing.

The process of reciprocity is only available to nursing assistants who are currently listed in another state and wish to transfer and work in SC. If they get approved, their record in the previous Registry will still remain. The second route is the most common method of gaining entry into the NAR. In this process, you will first need to establish eligibility by receiving the required training. This can be achieved by completing a SCDHHS-approved training program. CNA programs are offered by different facilities like nursing homes, hospitals, vocational and technical colleges, and many more. Approved programs are required to offer at least 100 hours of training, which are divided into lectures and at least 40 hours of practical training.

Those who have not yet been certified as a nursing assistant must take on both parts of the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program exam. This exam is divided into written/oral test and a random skills evaluation of the nursing skills that were taught during training. To get into the NAR, candidates must pass both parts.

After passing, the NACES will forward the test results of those who passed to Pearson VUE. Pearson VUE will then enter their names on the NAR as well as send their CNA cards within 10 days after passing.
