Many people believe becoming a nursing assistant is one of the best ways to start getting experience in the medical profession. In the state of Maryland you need to sign-up for state approved training to get the necessary skills to apply for the CNA exam so you can work. Training classes in the state must provide at least 100 hours combined of classroom instruction and practical experience in a medical setting. Upon completion of the program you can apply to take the nurse aide test by submitting a completed application along with your school transcripts, immunization records, and authorized background check.
A nursing assistant is commonly someone who is tasked with the basic care of residents of long-term care facilities, and does routine nursing procedures that have been delegated by the licensed nurse on duty. According to the law, all those who fall under that definition must register themselves to the Nurse Aide Registry. It is the Board of Nursing that is in charge of overseeing and maintaining this registry.
In Maryland, the CNA and the GNA registry have been merged together. If you want to find out the license status of an individual, you may do so by calling the registry toll free at 1-888-202-9861 or visit their website at http://167.102.241.39/verification/Search.aspx. When you open the site, you will find fields to specify the profession of the individual, indicate the type of license he or she has, as well as place the full name. If you are certain that the individual is certified, you can place in his or her license number if you know it.
You may perform your search by simply providing either:
1. The last name of the individual
2. The full name
3. The license number
4. The license number and the last name
If you are unsure of the spelling of the name, you may add the asterisk (*) before and/or after the name or at least a portion of the name. This type of search is called a “wildcard” search.
