The completion of a state-certified training program is one of the most basic requirements to become a nursing aide. The state requires that all nursing aides to complete a state-approved program to become eligible to apply for the license exams. Taking the license exams is a necessary step since it will be the only way for you to get your name entered in the state’s registry. The state will not allow any nursing aide to work in a nursing facility if his/her name is not in the registry. The certification training programs are found all over the state. They are offered by different institutions such as community college, community training centers, high schools, and even healthcare facilities. Most of the training programs found in Indiana can be completed within 6 months. The class you enroll in must provide 30 hours of class course work and 75 hours of practical experience in a nursing home setting.
Nursing aides from other states are welcome to apply for reciprocity if they wish to work in the state. The applicant must have a valid license or nursing aide status and a good relationship with their state when applying. Before they apply they should have the same number of hours that is required for those that did their training in Indiana. Once they meet that, they will be able to apply for the certifications exams. The exams will be made up of written competency, and skills test aspects. Once passed, they will be placed on the registry as a certified nursing assistant in Indiana. For more information, please follow this link: http://www.in.gov/isdh/20510.htm.
