Due to the increase in demand for nursing aides in the state of Hawaii, there are now more people who want to know how to get a CNA license. The first step in becoming one is to enroll in a training program. The program should be approved by the state to make sure that you will be able to take the competency exam afterwards. These programs are located all over the state and most training programs will take about 2 to 6 months to complete. Instruction will cover the skills you will need as a nurses aide and should provide at least 70 hours of lectures and 35 hours of clinical duties. You can then try to apply for a license exam. Finishing a training program will make you eligible to apply for the competency exams.
The competency exams for this state are composed of two parts, a written and a skills demonstration exam. You can also have the written exams replaced with an oral exam if you prefer. This is done by submitting a letter of request during your application. As for the skills demonstration, out of all the basic nursing skills that were taught, you will only be asked to perform 5 randomly selected skills. To get your name entered in the state’s Nurse Aide Registry, you must pass all the exams. Once it is in the registry, you should maintain this status to remain eligible for work as a nursing assistant. Nurse aide licenses in this state must be renewed every 24 months. According to the Federal Regulations, you must have worked for 8 hours with pay to be eligible for recertification. You will also have to pass a competency exam before your status will be renewed.
