A nurse aide is a paid individual who performs nursing and nursing-related care to individuals who are in a long term care facility, home health agency, assisted living center, or and adult day care center. Work under the supervision of the registered nurses and the medical staff. The roles of a nurse aide include:
• Providing care according to the patient’s care plan.
• Communicate with the patients, their family, and the other members of the health care team.
• Observe the patients for any significant changes
• Participate in the care planning when asked.
According to the federal and state law, a nurse aide must be on the Oklahoma Nurse Aide Registry to work in a long term care facility. There are two general ways to get into the registry. The first is by passing the competency exam and the other is by applying for reciprocity.
The process of reciprocity is only offered to nurse aides who are registered in another state. When they apply, they must be able to pass the national background check. They must not have any records of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of the resident’s property. When they apply, they must also have a valid certification.
Most who want to work as a nursing assistant in Oklahoma, will choose to enroll in a CNA training program. There, you will spend hours on both lectures and clinical experience. You will learn there the baskic nursing skills that you will use in taking care of the patients. Students must complete a state-certified nurse aide I training program before being qualified to schedule a testing date. Nursing students and nursing graduates may also apply. Foreign-trained nursing graduates are required to provide documents that show their legal entry into the country. All that you learn in the program will be tested in the state license examination and the exam is offered only to those who have received the proper education and training.
The competency exam consists of a written/oral exam and a skills evaluation. To get into the Registry, the candidates must be able to pass all the tests. If you fail in your initial attempt, you will be given another two tries to pass. These attempts must be done within 2 years of completing your training. If you fail after the third attempt, you will not be allowed to retake the exam unless you undergo retraining.
CNA certifications in the state must be renewed every 24 months. To be eligible for renewal, you must show proof that you had worked for a minimum of 8 hours as a paid nurse aide. You must have been supervised by a registered nurse while performing nursing or nursing-related care. The application forms are sent to you at least 1 month before your certification expires. It is important to renew your certification immediately since an expired license can no longer be renewed.
