The completion of a CNA training program is one of the first steps that you must take to become a nursing assistant. The program must be approved by the state in order for you to become eligible to take the exams. For a program to be approved, it must offer its students at least 75 hours of theoretical lessons and 100 hours in clinical experiences. The students must have exposure to real clinical areas like hospitals or nursing homes. While they are in the clinical area, they will be under to supervision of a trained healthcare team member. Depending on the program you enroll in, it will take you an average of about 6 months to complete your training.
As a nursing student, you will be trained in different nursing skills like vital signs taking, performing bed baths, feeding patients, assisting in the performance of ROM exercises, dressing, as well as some emergency procedures. You will also be taught in different concepts of the Fundamentals of Nursing like infection control, indirect care, mental health, proper communication, rehabilitation, and other basic care concepts.
After you complete your training, you can then apply for the CNA license exams. The license exams are conducted by Prometric and are composed of a written and a skills evaluation. Your written exam will have 60 questions where 10 of those will be used for statistical purposes. As for the skills demonstration, you will be asked to perform 5 randomly selected nursing skills. You must pass both exams to get your name in the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. To learn more about licensure for nursing assistants you can contact the registry at (850) 488-0595.
