To work as a nurse aide, you must be registered on a Nurse Aide Registry and possess a CNA license. There are different ways to gain entry into the registry. For those with no prior background in the field of health, it is important that they enroll and complete their training in a state-approved nurse aide training 1 program. They can find that these programs are offered by different training institutions like nursing homes, hospitals, community technical colleges, private training facilities, and some of the lectures even offer online.
To complete a training program, one must be able to meet the required 150 hours of training and pass the final exam, which consists of a knowledge test and a clinical skills exam. The training hours are divided into lectures and on-the-job training. During that time, they will be supervised by their qualified instructor.
To be a nursing assistant instructor, one must be a registered nurse who has at least 2 years of experience providing nursing care. One of those years must be spent working in a long-term healthcare facility. In addition to this, an aspiring instructor must have had completed a course about teaching adults or at least have some experience in the matter.
By completing an approved training program, the candidates will be able to apply for the license exams. Normally, the exam will consist of a written test and a return demonstration of selected nursing skills. For those with some problems with English, they may have an oral exam by simply requesting for it and paying an additional fee of $35.
If you have a qualified disability and would like to have some additional accommodations for your exam, you can request for one by filling out the ADA Accommodations Form, which can be downloaded from the OSBN official website. The request form should be submitted with the other requirements when you apply.
Each applicant is given three attempts to pass all the tests. You are only given up to two years, from the day you completed your training, to get your license. When you retake the exam, you will only need to pay and take the area where you failed. If you fail after the third try, you will not be allowed to retake unless you complete again another training program.
