According to the OBRA of ’87, one must be registered on a state’s Nurse Aide Registry and have an active certification to work as a nursing assistant in a federal long-term care facility.  What’s great about becoming a nursing assistant is that there are different routes that will take you to the same goal: a placement on the NAR.

However, for those who have never been certified as nursing assistants before, their only way to get a place on the NAR is by examination. This exam will test the competency of every aspiring nursing assistant in both knowledge and skills. Before an aspirant can apply for the exams, he must first establish eligibility by enrolling in a CNA training program.

Training is offered by hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living centers, high schools, government organizations, and private training facilities. The state requires them to offer no less than 105 hours of instructions to their students. All training curriculum is split into at least 75 hours of lectures and 16 hours of on-the-job training. Both parts of the training program are taught at the same time.

A registered nurse or a licensed practical nurse may also apply for the CNA exams if they wish to have a career as certified nursing assistants. When working in any healthcare setting, they’ll only be allowed to perform skills that are within the nursing assistant’s scope of work. Applicants through this process will have to show proof of completing a certified RN or LPN training program.

The exams are divided into two parts, which are both taken on the same day. The first part is a 2-hour multiple-choice knowledge test. This part may either be taken as a written or oral exam, depending on which is indicated by the applicant upon completing the application form. The second part of the exams is a practical skills demonstration in front of a nurse aide evaluator. Those who want to get certified must pass within one year after submitting the application forms for NAR placement.

A CNA certification and a place on the Nurse Aide Registry will allow you to work in any federally certified long-term care facility in Wyoming for up to two (2) years. Certified nursing assistants must work for at least 16 hours and complete 24 hours of in-service training to qualify for renewal. The expiration of all nursing assistant certification in this state falls on the last day of December of every even year. No employee is allowed to continue working with an expired certification or a bad record.
