In order to become eligible to apply for the license exams, you have to be able to complete a nursing assistant program. To ensure that you will be allowed to apply, you should only enroll in one that is approved by the state. These programs are required to offer at least 30 hours of classroom instructions and 75 hours of clinical experiences. It will take you an average of 2 to 6 months to complete your training. After you complete your training, your next step is to request from your training center the appropriate forms for the Final exams that you will need to send to the board. To schedule a test time you can contact Ivy Tech Community College by calling 317-917-5948.
The certification exams are composed of a written and a skills demonstration exam. In order for you to get your name entered in the state’s nurse aide registry, you will need to pass all the tests. Failing in one part will automatically mean a retake of all the tests. Once finished you will be placed on the Indiana State Nurse Aide Registry which is an online database employers can check before you are hired. After becoming certified you will still need to renew your active status for each two year period. This is accomplished by submitting work verification of time spent on the job, working at a licensed health care facility. Currently the ISDH Registry requires each nurse aide employee to work a minimum of 8 hours every two years. You can call the Indiana State Department of Health Division of Long Term Care if you have any addition questions at (317) 233-7442.
CNA license holders from other states are also welcome to work in Iowa if they apply for reciprocity. When they apply they should have a valid license and a good relationship with their state since they will also be required to pass the background checks. If you have records like negligence or patient abuse, you will no longer be allowed to practice in the state as a nursing assistant.
