The first step to be a nursing assistant is to enroll in a nursing assistant training program that is approved by the state. While enrolled in the program, you will be equipped with the skills and knowledge that you will use in taking care of the patient.
As a student, you will be expected to review the unit objectives of the program before training so that you will know what is expected of you. Your training will be composed mainly on basic nursing skills, personal care skills, mental health, social service needs, caring for the mentally challenged and rehabilitative services. In total classes will be at least 75 hours in duration and include skills practice covering 51 different tasks.
To ensure proper education and training, the state has required that the instructors of training programs should be Registered Nurse or another member of the healthcare team. LPNs and other professions such as therapists, physicians, pharmacists, and dietitians may only become Delegated Instructors and Guest Instructors. Primary instructors and program coordinators are always registered nurses.
At the end of your training, your next step will be to apply for and take the license exams. You will be sent an Authorization to Test (ATT) which will contain information about testing locations near you. By contacting a test facility you can schedule a time to take these exams which will include both a written and a skills demonstration. For the written exams, you will be given 2 hours to answer all the questions. As for the skills demonstration, you will have 20 minutes to perform the nursing skills that are asked. Once you pass the exams, you will then receive your license. For more information, you can call the MI Nurse Aide Program at 1-800-752-4724.
