So, what does it take to become a registered nursing assistant in West Virginia?
State Approved Training
Completing a CNA training program is a major requirement to be able to take the state exams. You can enroll in colleges, high schools, or vocational centers. This state does not honor classes that were done on the internet. You will need to complete a minimum of 120 hours of a state-approved nursing assistant training program. These hours are divided into both lectures and supervised clinical practice. Programs offered in the state take at least 4 weeks to complete. Due to the number of people who want to work as nursing assistants, there are now hundreds of programs that are offered throughout the state.
Completing an approved training program is a major requirement in qualifying for the State Competency Exam. Since nursing students receive similar training, they are allowed to apply for the examination. They must have successfully completed the Fundamentals of Nursing with at least 32 hours of clinical experience to qualify.
Testing
Upon completing an approved you’ll be allowed to take the competency exam. This exam is divided into a multiple-choice knowledge test and a skills evaluation exam. Candidates must pass both tests to the competency exam. You can apply for the exam by contacting the State testing agent at:

Requirements for Re-Certification
You can only work in West Virginia as a long-term nursing assistant if you have a nursing assistant certification. CNA Certifications in this state are only valid for 2 years and must be renewed on or before the date that they were issued. To qualify for renewal the holder must work for at least 8 hours as a paid nurse aide. A lapsed/expired certification can no longer be renewed. If the holder wants to work once more as a nursing assistant, he or she must complete a state-approved refresher course and take the State Competency Exam.
Applying for Reciprocity
A nursing assistant from another state can transfer and work in West Virginia by applying for reciprocity. An interested applicant must have a current or valid certification and a clean record. He or she must not have any records of patient abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of their properties.
