To become a nursing assistant, you must know how to properly take care of a resident. You can achieve this by enrolling in a state-approved training course. If you want to know about the enrollment or training schedule of a particular program, you can call the number provided above or ask the Nurse Aide Training Competency Evaluation Program by calling (614) 752-8285.
Courses in Ohio last 5-8 weeks and requires a minimum of 75 training hours to complete. For those who had already taken up nursing course and want to refresh their knowledge, they can enroll in a 2-week refresher course. These courses usually cost around $100-$200. If you missed a particular program, you do not need to worry since most of the programs restart their training fairly quickly. There are however, some programs that place their STNA training programs in semester scheduling.
By completing a state-approved program, you will become eligible to take on the competency exams. This is the only way for you to gain entry into a Nurse Aide Registry, in almost every state. The competency exams will consist of a written exam and a skills evaluation exam, which are to be taken only at approved testing sites.
Although passing the competency exam is the general way to become a nursing assistant, a CNA from one state can transfer to another if the state he is transferring to offers reciprocity. In the case in Ohio, a CNA applying for reciprocity must provide a number of documents to the Ohio NAR. The documents may be faxed to (614) 564-2467 or e-mailed to NAR@odh.ohio.gov.
Once your name is on the Registry, you name will remain active for up to 2 years. An active status on the Registry means that you are able work long-term in a nursing facility. To keep it active, you will have to find qualified work every 24 months. You will have to meet at least 7 ½ consecutive hours or a total of 8 cumulative working hours is required for you to renew your license.
Potential students can learn more about the Ohio Department of Health Nurse Aide Registry by speaking to them directly. Their contact phone numbers are (800) 582-5908 (in-state) or (614) 752-9500 (out-of-state.)
