The prerequisites of being a certified nursing assistant in the state of Maryland require that you first complete a training program. Certified nursing assistant training programs need to offer at least 100 hours of instruction in hands on CNA skills and classroom coursework. After completing your training, you can apply to take a certification exam. The exams are given by the Maryland Geriatric Nursing Assistant Testing Service. They can be contacted at 866-257-6470 if you have questions about testing.
If you want to work in a certified comprehensive care facility, then you must get a GNA or Geriatric Nursing Aide certification. To be eligible to get one, you must be a holder of a current/active nurse aide license that has no records of patient neglect or abuse. You will still be required to register on the GNA registry, which the Board has fused with the registry.
Similar to becoming a nursing assistant, there is also an examination that you must pass before you will become a full-fledged GNA. These exams are still composed of a written and clinical exam, which includes the 21 nursing skills that are tested in Maryland. These exams are given by the MDGNATS through the Susquehanna Red Cross.
If you pass their exams, it will be the Red Cross that will notify the Board. The Board will be the ones that will give you your certification with your GNA initials on it, and not the testing site. Keep in mind that you will not be issued a new certification until the next renewal of your nurse aide license. If you wish to verify your certification, you may do it online if you qualify. You can contact the BON with any questions by calling 410-585-1990.
