One of the ways you can become a CNA in South Carolina is to take on the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program Examination. This exam is conducted by Pearson VUE in coordination with the NACES.
Before you can take the exams, you must first apply for it by completing the application forms. You can get a copy of the forms from your nurse aide instructor or by downloading it from www.pearsonvue.com. One of the requirements for the exams is to show your certification of completion of training, which you can get by completing a state-approved CNA class. You will also need to provide a photo ID, 2×2 pictures, a copy of your birth certificate, and your social security card. The initial fee for first time takers is $101. All the documents, including the payments, should be in a single envelope and sent to:
NACES Plus Foundation, Inc.
South Carolina NNAAP
8501 North Mopac Expressway, Suite 400
Austin, TX 78759
Once all the documents are received, they will send you back your Authorization to Test Notice, which is a yellow confirmation card. This card will contain vital information about your examination. If you do not get the Notice within 10 business days, please call NACES at (800) 279-3517.
The first part of the NNAAP exam is the knowledge test. Candidates may take this in its written or oral version. The oral version also has the option of being taken in either English or Spanish. If you choose to take the oral exam, you will need to notify NACES during your application. Regardless of which exam you choose, you will only be given a maximum of 2 hours to answer all the questions. You must get no less than 70% to pass this test.
The second part of the NNAAP exam is the skills evaluation. You will be given 35 minutes to perform 5 nursing skills in front of a nurse aide evaluator. Only 4 of the skills will be randomly chosen from a set list since the one of the skills will always be hand-washing. In order to pass this portion, you must perform all the skills satisfactorily. You can check the complete list of skills in the Candidate Handbook, which you can download from the Pearson VUE website.
If you pass all the tests, your name will be added to the SCNAR. Pearson VUE will also send your CNA card and wallet card to your mailing address within 10 working days from the date of your exam. Your certification will only be valid for 2 years. You will need to renew your certification before it expires. A nurse aide is not allowed to work with an expired license. To renew, you must work for at least 8 hours as a paid nurse aide every 24 months.
