One needs to meet both federal and state requirements before working as a long-term nurse aide. This means that you need to complete a state-approved CNA program and take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program examination or NNAAP exam. During the process, you’ll be subjected to multiple physical and medical exams as well as undergo the criminal background checks with fingerprinting.
CNA Training
When looking for a program to enroll in, you’ll need to make sure that the program is approved by the state to ensure that you’ll be allowed to apply for the NNAAP exam afterwards. Approved programs are required to offer a minimum of 65 hours of classroom/laboratory works and 55 hours of supervised clinical practice. Students are not allowed to perform any procedure that hasn’t been taught in the classroom nor are they allowed to perform without the presence of a qualified instructor in the same room. Depending on the program you choose, it can take you 4 to 24 weeks to complete your training.
RN/LPN Challenge
An aspiring candidate or student who successfully completed the Fundamentals of Nursing with a grade average of “C” within the last 2 years can qualify for the NNAAP exam. They must have also had done 32 hours of clinical experience in a certified nursing facility.
Requirements for Review:
• A certified copy of the student’s transcript of records
• Letter of recommendation from the student’s instructor, which includes the verification of successful completion of clinical hours.
• Letter from the candidate requesting to challenge the NNAAP exam
The National Nurse Aide Assessment program Examination
The NNAAP exam was designed to test the competency of all aspiring candidates in both knowledge and skills as a nurse aide. Both exams are conducted on the same day at an approved testing facility. If a candidate passes both tests within 3 attempts, then his or her name will be added to the Nurse Aide Registry and will be given a certification. According to the law, only individuals whose names are found on the list are allowed to work as long-term nurse aides.
Employers are required to check each applicant’s certification during application before hiring any of them. If you wish to check your status on the NAR, you may also do so by visiting the state’s official website at www.wvdhhr.org/ohflac/na.
