One needs to meet both federal and state requirements before working as a long-term nurse aide. This means that you need to complete a state-approved CNA program and take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program examination or NNAAP exam. During the process, you’ll be subjected to multiple physical and medical exams as well as undergo the criminal background checks with fingerprinting.

When looking for a program to enroll in, you’ll need to make sure that the program is approved by the state to ensure that you’ll be allowed to apply for the NNAAP exam afterwards. Approved programs are required to offer a minimum of 65 hours of classroom/laboratory works and 55 hours of supervised clinical practice. Students are not allowed to perform any procedure that hasn’t been taught in the classroom nor are they allowed to perform without the presence of a qualified instructor in the same room. Depending on the program you choose, it can take you 4 to 24 weeks to complete your training.

RN/LPN Challenge

An aspiring candidate or student who successfully completed the Fundamentals of Nursing with a grade average of “C” within the last 2 years can qualify for the NNAAP exam. They must have also had done 32 hours of clinical experience in a certified nursing facility.
Requirements for Review:

•    A certified copy of the student’s transcript of records
•    Letter of recommendation from the student’s instructor, which includes the verification of successful completion of clinical hours.
•    Letter from the candidate requesting to challenge the NNAAP exam

The  National Nurse Aide Assessment program Examination

The NNAAP exam was designed to test the competency of all aspiring candidates in both knowledge and skills as a nurse aide. Both exams are conducted on the same day at an approved testing facility. If a candidate passes both tests within 3 attempts, then his or her name will be added to the Nurse Aide Registry and will be given a certification. According to the law, only individuals whose names are found on the list are allowed to work as long-term nurse aides.

Employers are required to check each applicant’s certification during application before hiring any of them. If you wish to check your status on the NAR, you may also do so by visiting the state’s official website at www.wvdhhr.org/ohflac/na.

To be eligible to provide direct care to the residents of South Carolina Medicaid nursing facilities, an individual must become a CNA. A nursing aide can only be considered certified if the individual’s name is listed on the state’s Nurse Aide Registry. The Registry, which is currently maintained by Pearson VUE, contains the list of nursing aides who have met the standards of both federal and state. It also contains the Abuse Registry. Once placed there, the nursing aide may no longer work in a Medicaid nursing facility.

nurse-aide-student-with-elderly-womanTo get on the SCNAR, you must first attend a CNA training course. These courses will teach and prepare the nursing aide candidates on how to properly function independently as a nursing aide. These courses take at least 100 hours to complete. Your training will consist of lectures and a minimum of 40 hours of clinical practice.

By completing an approved program, you will become eligible to apply for the certification exams, which are also conducted by Pearson VUE along with the NACES. If you pass both the knowledge test and the clinical skills evaluation, you will gain entry into the SCNAR.

This exam is not only limited to those who were able to complete a CNA training course in the state. Those who completed an out-of-state training course may also apply, provided that their training is similar to the ones in SC. Nursing students, graduate, and military trained medics may also be eligible to apply, but this is on a case-to-case basis. To find out if they are eligible, they must contact (803) 898-2587 or email scnar@dhhs.state.sc.us.

Certified nurse aides who are currently listed in another state may also directly gain entry into the NAR by applying for reciprocity. When they apply, they must have a current or valid certification as well as a clean record. They will not be permitted to work if they have records of abuse, neglect, or misappropriation of a patient’s property.

Listings on the Registry will only remain there for 24 months. To keep it there, the nursing aide must renew his/her certification. One of the requirements for recertification is to work for at least 8 hours, while under the supervision of a licensed nurse. A notice along with the recertification forms are sent by Pearson VUE at least 60 days before the expiration of the nursing aide’s certification. If one fails to receive this, the forms can be downloaded from the official Pearson VUE website at www.pearsonvue.com.
